Growing Conditions

The estate extends over 44 hectares of south-facing terraced slopes to the west of Gorizia, protected both from the cold northern winds and the characteristic “bora” wind of Trieste. The area is particularly suited to viticulture, making Friuli Venezia Giulia one of the leading grape-growing regions of Italy already since the end of the 19th century. Attems promotes both native grapes such as Ribolla Gialla, as well as other noble varieties including Sauvignon Banc, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Merlot. Given the particularly idyllic environmental conditions, the vineyards flourish and yield their fruits in an ecosystem in which biodiversity reigns.

Winter 2022 was dry, with little rainfall and fairly mild temperatures, which gradually increased into the first half of April, when the Pinot Grigio vines began budding in the Attems vineyard. We were able to delay the opening of the buds by about 10 days compared to the local average using late pruning techniques, which we adopted several years ago.

Spring was characterised by mild temperatures and generally good weather, ensuring constant vegetation growth. The Pinot Grigio reached full bloom on 25 May, much earlier than the previous two vintages.

In June and July, the summer heat was mitigated by some beneficial rain, which allowed the plants to head into August without an excessive water imbalance.

This year, the Pinot Grigio bunches were relatively sparse. Unlike previous years, we did not defoliate the leaf wall in this vineyard, keeping the grapes better protected from the sun. By harvest time, the grapes had the typical thick and consistent intense pink skin, which allowed us to once again obtain an excellent Ramato this year.

The vineyards are located between the plains and slopes in the Province of Gorizia, at an average altitude of 60 m above sea level.

Winemaking

Attems Pinot Grigio Ramato continues a tradition of the Republic of Venice, since “ramato” was the term that referred to Pinot Grigio. You have entered the fresh world of a wine with a beautiful rosed hue born from a particular vinification method during which the must remains in short contact with the skins.

Since the year 2000 Attems is property of the Frescobaldi family who continue to pursue its tradition with great respect of its distinctive characteristics.

Nose

The 2022 Attems Ramato boasts a rich, complex bouquet of crisp fruity impressions including white peach, and cantaloupe followed by blackberry and bitter cherry with an intriguing hint of wild flowers. It is delicately floral on the nose, with notes of broom and Alpine rose. When swirled in the glass, a distinctive aroma of green apple comes to the fore, carrying through into each sip.

Palate

On the palate, the 2022 Ramato vintage possesses a decisive and balanced character that is striking for its great dynamism and persistence. The wine’s finish delights with sensations of gooseberry and citrus peel. The body is light yet precise and complex, with a balanced acidity that flows nicely over the palate. The finish is characterised by the minerality associated with the area, with hints of currants and cherry plums.

Appearance

Bright, typical colour, with a mango-coloured rim.
